“If one aspect of design has suffered most in its transition to the Web, it is the art of typography. For years, Web typography involved little more than choosing a typeface and font size. Unstyled Times New Roman was the norm, and the integration of established typographical techniques and rules was unimagined.”

“I need help understanding the concept of kerning fonts. Is there a formula to it, or is it really what looks ‘best?’”

“Letter spacing is a fine-tuning process that demonstrates a designer’s sensitivity towards typography. Words are made up of what seems to be an infinite number of letter combinations. But not all of these letters fit together very well.” (Thanks Coudal Partners!)

“After several relatively sad years for all font users who were looking for a professional font manager, Linotype is pleased to fill the gap with the new FontExplorer X. Font management has never been so simple, and font sorting, font shopping and font discovery are now more fun than ever. FontExplorer X gives computer users all the font functions they could need, and lets them decide how deeply they wish to dive into various font themes.”

“In 1994, the members of European Parliament urged the creation of a new comprehensive road typeface system, the development of a ‘general high recognition and perception font’, and recommended adoption of uniform design practices. Now, after five years of extensive research, the European Committee for Uniformity of Type Design and Type Safety completed the research and presented legible-for-all-purposes-suitable-typeface.” (Thanks Coudal Partners!)

“That alphabet. It’s been around a long time, and I, for one, have some complaints. Don’t you think it’s time for a redesign? I mean, the thing’s not exactly ‘fresh’ anymore, is it?”

“In a world of images, words sometimes don’t seem to have as much value as appearances. But what about the appearance of words? While most of us don’t think about typography, beyond choosing among the preinstalled fonts in our home computers, consider an up-and-coming font, like Bello. Bello recently won a best new ”display font” award from the Type Directors Club, and is on pace to sell a respectable 160 licenses in its first year.”

“So I like walked into the lab the other day and there it was just staring me in the face … and I said to my co-workers — like do you see what I see? And they’re all like — what? And I’m like — my gawd how can you NOT see what I see — it’s right there. And they’re like okay you’re starting to freak me out here — just calm down and tell me what the hell is going on. And I’m like look-at-that-f-ligature.”

“Graffiti Taxonomy presents isolated letters from various graffiti tags, reproduced in similar scales and at close proximity. The intent of these studies is to show the diversity of styles as expressed in a single character. In these photographs, the ‘S’ is reproduced from photographs of tags taken in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, while the ‘A’ is reproduced from tags from Central Park North to 125th St. in Harlem.” (Thanks kottke.org!)

“When I was eight years old, I had one of the most formative typographic experiences of my life. I would only have five more like it: three, six, 22, 25, and now 28 years later (in other words, just after midnight tonight). Of course I’m referring to my first glimpse of the opening titles of Star Wars, way back in 1977. Not having seen a lot of old Flash Gordon serials, I had never seen a movie start off like this.”
