How to reduce your PSD file size using Photoshop
Wow:
If you want to save some space (my tests showed a loss of 20%, but I didn’t try it on bigger files, which could lead to an even better result), put a white filled layer on the top of your PSD file, save it, and see the slim-fast effect.
Thanks Frank!

sorry to disappoint, but in 99% of all cases it makes just more sense to turn off “maximize backward compatibility” in the photoshop prefs and save files _without_ previews.
that’s pretty much what this tip does. (just more complicated)
in general a composite of all layers is saved in a PSD (ok, it’s a bit more complicated than that) and that just doesn’t compress as well, as a white layer.
so if you are really want so save HD space, you can have this way easier ;-)
Well, duh on me! It’s obviously the similar to turning off previews. Been doing that for years to make web graphics a wee bit smaller. I wonder how much is saved from turning off the backward compatibility feature, which is occasionally needed. Thanks, Phil!
