“In the pale-skinned and over-caffeinated world of Internet designers, Joshua Davis is a rock star–the Tommy Lee of digerati. A self-taught Flash master, he rose to prominence in the ’90s with his work for the now-defunct Web design firm Kioken, as well as his personal sites: dreamless.org, a once hugely popular message board for the design community, and the open source Flash laboratory/showcase praystation.com.” (Thanks kottke.org!)

“MySpace is a community site that allows you to setup a profile and blog and connect with friends and strangers. It’s also a designer’s and lover of design’s worst nightmare because the UI of the site is atrocious yet it boasts 17 million visitors a month (and rising) and was recently purchased for over $580 million by News Corp.” (Thanks Waxy!)

“…generally we are contracted on a ‘work-for-hire’ basis. That’s nice and frequently lucrative. But, over time, we’ve developed some problems with it. You see, once we hand over our creative work we lose all connection to it and immediately stop profiting from it.”

“After bringing you the design stylings of Michael Bierut and Gregg Pasquarelli, we’re bringing you the next Unbeige Interview of The Every Week Or So, Although It Depends on Everyone’s Schedules And People Can Be Hard To Track Down. Steven Heller, graphic design enthusiast, chair of the SVA’s MFA program, editor of AIGA Voice, contributing editor to publications from Print to ID to Mother Jones, author of over 90 books on graphic design, and art director of the local paper’s book review, rocked one of our worlds when he took us to graphic design school for an hour, then rocked the other one even harder when he answered these questions.”

“Astronomers have pinpointed the moment Ansel Adams clicked the shutter on his famous photograph, Autumn Moon, the High Sierra from Glacier Point. It was taken on 15 September 1948, at 1903 precisely.” (Thanks kottke.org!)

“Identifying falsified images can be straightforward if you know a few tricks… Like it or not, fake images are everywhere and have become a part of today’s culture. Thanks to the popularity of digital cameras and the availability of desktop imaging software that allows users to easily manipulate images, fake images have become commonplace, especially on the Internet.”

New weblog by XPLANE founder Dave Gray: “Communication is one of the most important skills anyone can have, in business and in life. As individuals and as a species, I believe we will be both happier and more productive if we can improve our ability to communicate. This blog is dedicated to that effort.”

“In 1953, while working a hotel switchboard, a college graduate named Shea Zellweger began a journey of wonder and obsession that would eventually lead to the invention of a radically new notation for logic. From a basement in Ohio, guided literally by his dreams and his innate love of pattern, Zellweger developed an extraordinary visual system — called the ‘Logic Alphabet’ — in which a group of specially designed letter-shapes can be manipulated like puzzles to reveal the geometrical patterns underpinning logic.” (Thanks Design Observer!)

“Your Rights When You Are Stopped or Confronted for Photography: The right to take photographs is under assault now more than ever. People are being stopped, harassed, and even intimidated into handing over their personal property simply because they were taking photographs of subjects that made other people uncomfortable.”

“As Matt Haber observed last week, the cover of Radar’s September/October issue was art directed by George Lois, the advertising genius who created dozens of classic Esquire covers between 1962 and 1972. The new Radar cover is a parody of a Lois Esquire creation that caused a big controversy in early 1968. Here’s what no one’s noticed yet: For some time now, George Lois has been happily recycling his old Esquire covers for a bunch of other magazines. No fewer than four are on the newsstand right now, including Radar.”
