SkinTune

“Photoshop Plug-in That Automatically Corrects Skin Color: If you are a fashion, portrait, or wedding photographer, you know first-hand how difficult it is to correct skin color. You tweak, adjust, and experiment with Curves, but the slightest alteration can cause an unwanted color shift.”

The bittersweet story of fathers, sons, and comics

“One ‘Gasoline Alley’ Sunday page from 1930 offers a typically bittersweet moment. As father and son take a walk in the fall, Skeezix asks Uncle Walt why the leaves change color. (King was the first cartoonist to forgo the convention of comic strip time and let his characters age.) The answers that Walt provides are less important than the tone and texture of the scene, a leisurely communion between parent and child marked by an undercurrent of sadness, the feeling that even when the idealized world of comics brings fathers and sons together, they will not be together forever.”

Type Casting

“In a world of images, words sometimes don’t seem to have as much value as appearances. But what about the appearance of words? While most of us don’t think about typography, beyond choosing among the preinstalled fonts in our home computers, consider an up-and-coming font, like Bello. Bello recently won a best new ”display font” award from the Type Directors Club, and is on pace to sell a respectable 160 licenses in its first year.”

Styled Form Controls

“To solve the javascript issue the styled form controls needed to be dynamically inserted into the page using a javascript. No javascript, no change. Original experiments with innerHTML and regExp failed miserably and proved inelegant. However I am still using innerHTML to produce the styled buttons in Internet Explorer. To solve the CSS problem the styled form controls needed to be invisible with CSS disabled, and likewise the unstyled controls needed to be visible.”

Ten Tips for New Trainers/Teachers

“Just because you’ve used lots of software doesn’t mean you can write code. Just because you’ve been in lots of buildings doesn’t mean you can be an architect. And just because you’ve logged a million frequent flyer miles doesn’t mean you can fly a plane.”

Rick Valicenti: This Time It’s Personal

“The more graphic design monographs are published, the less certain we seem to be about their purpose. Are they history? Inspiration? Self promotion? Self indulgence? This confusion often begins with the subjects themselves. Some emulate the authority of the art history book but add confessional captions suited to a tell-all memoir. Others lose themselves in experimental layouts that provide a live demonstration of creative viruosity, but impede understanding by the uninitiated. And then there’s Rick Valicenti.”

Should Newspapers Sponsor Blogs Written by Reporters?

“Moments after Silicon Valley blogger Matt Marshall saw a New York Times story saying Microsoft Corp. was in talks to acquire Internet marketer Claria Corp. last month he raised questions about it. Mr. Marshall, writing in his Web log, called the report ’strange’ and mused about whether the paper had been led astray by an anonymous source. A blogger critiquing the mainstream media is hardly unusual. But Mr. Marshall is also a reporter for the San Jose Mercury News who had been following Microsoft and Claria as part of his normal beat.”

“Purpose: To document the art of the doodle — that spontaneous expression of thought, inspired yet underappreciated; simplistic yet memorable; transient yet powerful denizens of cocktail napkins, notebook margins and everywhere in between.”

THE FINEST, INTERLOPINGEST F-LIGATURE

“So I like walked into the lab the other day and there it was just staring me in the face … and I said to my co-workers — like do you see what I see? And they’re all like — what? And I’m like — my gawd how can you NOT see what I see — it’s right there. And they’re like okay you’re starting to freak me out here — just calm down and tell me what the hell is going on. And I’m like look-at-that-f-ligature.”
