“MakingRoom is a magazine about the process, intention and results of image-making. You’ll see quite a bit of photography here but MakingRoom is at heart an ‘Art Magazine’ and will be open to the discussion of film, video, painting, and more. It’s our hope to comfortably view and examine the range of individual processes that lead to powerful visuals. We plan to talk fairly plainly but with depth to artists at all stages of their practice.”

“I just finished making a little Flickr toy: flickReplacr. It’s a bookmarklet that seems to work fairly well in IE and Firefox/Mozilla (Safari - not so much). What does it do? You can highlight any word on any web page, click the flickReplacr bookmarklet, and the word gets swapped out with a random image from flickr that was tagged with that word. So “apple” becomes a 75×75 image of an apple.”

“If you’re like me (and I’m counting on that), you’ve spent many a sleepless night scouring the web for free fonts that don’t suck. Undoubtedly, you’ve discovered that finding quality, free typefaces requires sifting through a lot of crap. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone did all that sifting for you?”

“Your equipment DOES NOT affect the quality of your image. The less time and effort you spend worrying about your equipment the more time and effort you can spend creating great images. The right equipment just makes it easier, faster or more convenient for you to get the results you need.”

“When called upon, FlySketch will show its main drawing window above all other windows in the system. Change the transparency of the canvas, and you can trace, draw over, highlight, and capture just about anything that shows up behind FlySketch.”

“Smugmug owns no printers. We focus on great photo sharing and do our best to make sure our customers can buy prints from a top print provider. Authoritative comparisons are hard to find. We see comparisons in popular magazines and wonder, what test shots were used? Who did the judging and what were their tastes? Under what light did they view the photos? Why are opinions so varied? We decided to dig deeper. Over a three-month period ending November, 2003, we sent 26 test shots repeatedly to 10 print providers.”

“Whether they’re strapped to our belts, sitting on our desks, or jammed in an overstuffed closet, we absolutely love our gadgets. So it wasn’t exactly easy coming up with the definitive list of the 100 best gadgets ever unleashed. In the weeks we spent debating the entries, tempers were flared, fingers were pointed, chairs were smashed over heads, and feelings were hurt. But we emerged, like Moses from the mountain, with the world’s most authoritative ranking of the best gadgets of all time.”

“If anything about current interaction design can be called ‘glamorous,’ it’s creating Web applications. After all, when was the last time you heard someone rave about the interaction design of a product that wasn’t on the Web? (Okay, besides the iPod.) All the cool, innovative new projects are online.”

“Artefact derives from latin arte factum, which means artificial. In general, that implies an object made by the human hand, an artificial object. Artefacts are manmade for a specific purpose with an intention of fulfilling that purpose. Sometimes they also fulfill unspoken purposes. This paper addresses some aspects of the intentionally made artefacts and their way through the cooperative design process and how they will be attached to new meanings on the way.”

“‘Without taking away the artistic qualities of James Nachtwey’s powerful images, I find the film tremendously flawed,’ stated Pedro Meyer, celebrated Mexican photographer. ‘Instead of allowing his pictures to speak for themselves, James has lent himself to a documentary that is portraying him as a self-suffering photographer ready to save the world.’”
