THE ART OF EXPLANATION

“The events unfolding in Iraq often defy easy explanation. To take it all in, a reader must understand complicated military technology, vast cultural differences, great stretches of geography, and complex jargon. By working to simplify and define, a visual journalist can help a reader to better understand — illustrating the way something works, outlining key relationships or creating a chronology of events, for example. Poynter Online would like to showcase the efforts of visual journalists as they help readers find clarity. ‘The Art of Explanation’ is a place to share ideas and processes as we continue to improve the graphics we create. We invite artists from around the world to share-pieces that worked well for their audience.”

A God-Awful Flag

“The Georgia House of Representatives passed a bill recently that would redesign the state flag. In hopes of ending a decade-long controversy, the new scheme would eliminate the famously divisive Confederate battle flag imagery from the state flag for the first time since the mid-1950s. In its place, Georgia will return to a design based on the original Confederate national flag — the famous ‘Stars and Bars’ — that featured a blue field with three stripes of red and white. On the middle white stripe, the words ‘In God We Trust’ will be written.”

Photo Friday

“Each week Photo Friday posts a photo assignment. Your mission is the creative interpretation of the week’s theme. When you’re done, post the picture you took to your website and submit your link to Photo Friday. Photo Friday is about challenging our participants to be original and creative within the constraints of the week’s theme. It’s not a competition. Anyone with a camera and a place on the internet to post pictures can participate.”
