American Sign Museum

“The American Sign Museum was founded to inform and educate the general public as well as business and special interest groups of the history of the sign industry and its significant contribution to commerce and the American landscape. The purpose of the American Sign Museum is to preserve, archive and display a historical collection of signs in their many types and forms. The Museum will also document and survey the products and equipment utilized in the design and manufacture of signs, and offer biographical information of the people who have contributed to the industry.”

Infographics on MTV (Royksopp)

This link goes straight to a RealAudio file. This Royksopp video, for “You Remind Me,” is made entirely of animated and morphing information graphics. They’re pretty good, too. It’s fun to watch, but the song is lame. (UPDATED 19 Nov 2006: Here’s a new link to the video on YouTube: Royksopp’s “You Remind Me” — thanks Dutch Driver!)

An information design timeline

From “1861: Charles Minard draws Napoleon’s march against Moscow. See the information graphic that Edward Tufte calls ‘probably the best statistical graphic ever drawn’ and then order a copy.” …to… “2000: The IDJ is now published by John Benjamins, under the editorial direction of Piet Westendorp and Karel van der Waarde.”

Don’t Link to Us!

“Don’t Link to Us! links to sites that attempt to impose substantial restrictions on other sites that link to them. The Linking Policy for Don’t Link to Us! precludes us from requesting permission to link to a site, and compels us to link directly to the targeted page (i.e., a ‘deep link’) rather than to a site’s home page.”

You Are Here: Maps 101

“Maps are one of the most basic (and informative) infographics. The simple map. A rectangle with a few lines, some labels, and an X can impart what it would take hundreds of words to describe. Maps are an abstraction of our world, a representation of space. At their most basic, they tell us where. If tweaked and tuned properly, they can tell us where, how, and even why.”

BlogTree.com

“BlogTree.com is a web site that maintains a database of blog relationships and allows you to browse blogs’ pedigree. You can register your blog(s) and note which blogs inspired them (their parents). You can then notify the parent blog’s author, as well as authors of any blogs that you think your blog inspired, about BlogTree.com and encourage them to register their blogs and note their parent blogs. As more and more blog authors participate, unrelated families of blogs will find common ancestors or descendants.”
