“On Oct. 17, seven accomplished designers were presented with the http://www.chryslerdesignawards.com/” title=”External WWW link”>Chrysler Design Awards, prestigious annual prizes for innovation and achievement in various disciplines of design. That afternoon, the editors and reporters of House & Home invited them to sit and to discuss their responses to Sept. 11 and to the situations of the last six weeks. Can — and should — design play an important part? And how?”

“So you have an XHTML document. You’ve also been a good little web developer and used style sheets to control what your document looks like. You’ve even gone the extra mile and created several alternative style sheets to show how hardcore you are. Great. But now you need a cross-browser way to dynamically switch between the style sheets.”

“I made this site for several reasons… First of all I want to discuss visual journalism — or infographics, with as many people as possible. I love to share my opinions and I also expect to learn something from all of you. …The examples I take from various media to discuss and review is meant to initiate inspiring discussions. It is not my aim with this site to be pleasant or unpleasant, although I hope everyone enjoys getting feedback on their work.”

“We present a new framework for processing images by example, called ‘image analogies.’ Rather than attempting to program individual filters by hand, we attempt to automatically learn filters from training data.”

“This essay asks the reader to consider some subtleties and abstractions in dealing with interface design. By using examples of real vs. perceived problems, the notion is developed that many problems call for a solution but are false because they are problems of perception rather than reality. Solving problems of perception do not solve the underlying problem. Only by solving real problems is true value added. The specific notion in the case of user interfaces is that interface design is much more than graphics or HTML.”
