Study of Art Gives Insight Into Brain’s Structure

“Understanding what makes a work of art beautiful might be an important clue into the workings of the human brain, a scientist reported on Thursday. In an article in the latest issue of the journal Science, Semir Zeki proposed a new field of science — neuroesthetics — which would study the relationship between art and the brain. ‘Visual art obeys the laws of the visual brain, and thus reveals these laws to us,’ he wrote. Artists have a way of tapping into the parts of the brain that are stimulated by art, said Zeki, a professor of neurobiology at University College London.”

Copyrights and copywrongs

“Why Thomas Jefferson would love Napster: The dawn of the 21st century has illuminated an array of conflicts over the regulation of information in America: Napster, DVD-hacking, the right to create a parody, the rewards for freelance writers in a digital world, and the future of the Microsoft monopoly. Each of these cases rests on several distinct pedestals of ideals. As a nation, we would like to reward enterprise and creativity, allow free and open access to ideas, and benefit from a rich trove of music, literature, journalism, and art. Often these goals conflict, and courts must choose among them.”

Typographic Voices

“Typography — how type is used rather than the specific design of typefaces — has always been a primary workhorse for communicating content. In much current design work though, images often take precedent over typography because of their power in terms of visual form. It is generally accepted that we live in an image-based culture rather than in one that is based on the written word. Perhaps because of the emphasis on images in design, more and more designers are returning to typography as a means to make their work stand out.”

Design for Process, Not Products

“Customers need compelling reasons to complete complex tasks on the Web. It’s usually easier to pick up the phone and deal with a salesperson than to go it alone on the Web. Users often tell us that the Web is OK for preliminary research, but useless for closing deals. Most B-to-B sites overlook their users’ perspective in their eagerness to move them to the checkout line.”
