“The first thing that struck me about Reinventing Comics is that, unlike Understanding Comics, in which the best way to illustrate mechanisms of the comics form was in the very form it was describing, the only reason to have ‘written’ Reinventing Comics in comics form was to capitalize on the commercial success of the previous volume and to bloat what would have been a 50-page essay into a $19.95 book. There is no intrinsic reason Reinventing Comics should itself be a comic.”

“Good ideas are hard to find. Project schedules, plans and budgets are important, but without quality ideas, great design is impossible. Finding people that can create and cultivate good ideas is always difficult, and often beyond our control. However, everyone can develop their own creative thinking skills, and can provide an environment that supports creativity. The best teams know how to balance quality engineering practices with a creative and supportive work environment. This essay on idea generation describes how this can be done, and offers advice on defining and managing the creative process.”

“The ‘Barnstar Subterfuge’ is a simple little exercise in collaboration and subversion. In the course of all of our work-a-day lives we post pages for commercial sites that we have designed and built. During the creative process we often make arbitrary decisions about shapes and decorative elements to include. We thought it might be interesting to suggest a shape that designers would adapt and ‘hide’ in some of their commercial work.” Read all about it at the new Design Culture Network site built by the good folks at Coudal Partners.

“This PDF document presents the results of an April 2001 survey of Information Architect job descriptions listed on Monster.com and HotJobs.com during the first quarter of 2001. The data presentation format is intentionally — and with permission — based upon a July 2000 survey done by Jesse James Garret so as to provide a basis for comparision with the earlier survey.”

The Parsons School of Design uses a subway map metaphor for navigation. Hmmmm. “Since 1896, Parsons has been the leader in design education. Parsons is one of the largest and most competitive schools of art and design in the orld. Located in Greenwich Village — the heart of New York City — Parsons draws faculty from the design professions.”
