Day Without Art/World Aids Day History

& December 2000

“On December 1st, 1989, loss prompted artists in New York to organize the first ‘Day Without Art.’ Some galleries closed their doors in mourning for the day or shrouded paintings. Theaters were silent and dark. Communities across the nation observed ‘Day Without Art’ with silence. Ten years later, AIDS continues to levy a heavy toll in every community, and artists continue to remember their friends, colleagues, and lovers on December 1st.”
