“The use of Flash/Shockwave content on the web has become very widespread recently, and has led to a certain amount of controversy over its value. There are various usability issues in the use of Flash, as outlined in Jakob Nielsen’s report. Nielsen raises several valid points, but I feel that his assertion that Flash is 99% bad is misguided, assuming that the web consists entirely of corporate sites, and that Flash content is generally gratuitous animation in the form of intros or information delivery systems which could be better made in html.”

“This is a collection of quotations (collected from my larger, more general quotes collection) which I see as having some relevance to the craft of programming and software design. There is a conspicuous dominance of quotes which extol the virtues of simplicity (and the deceptive difficulties involved in achieving it).” The virtues of simplicity apply to more than just software, of course…

“The growth of e-commerce and business-to-business (B2B) applications, customer relationship management, and clickstream analysis has created an unprecedented emphasis on knowing who our users are and designing usable applications. However, backing corporate commitments to usability with a user-driven web application development process is a challenge. Designers find themselves struggling to design new applications from the ground up, defining web UI standards as they go, all the while under pressure to deliver applications to the market in ‘web time.’”

“These are adapted from the three levels that theorists in education and instructional design consider when designing courses. *Physical, the ability to find information; *Cognitive (intellectual), the ability to understand information; *Affective (emotional), the ability to feel comfortable with the presentation of the information (comfort with the information itself might not be possible, depending on the message). In the next three sections, I address each of the levels in detail, explaining what it is, how it relates to current conversations in technical communication, and name the elements of design and some of the key design issues addressed.”

“Customers wanted us to design their highly interactive e-commerce Web sites very quickly. But the Web user interface design tools we were using were too slow. iXL developed a new tool, called a Conceptual User Interface (CUI), that allowed us to quickly and iteratively design interactive Web user interfaces in a shorter period of time. To improve quality and efficiency, we used the CUI with other design steps and tools.” Groundbreaking! (Snicker!)

“Ambigrams. Words as art. For the past 25 years, the focus of my artwork and graphic design has been on words. Language, philosophy, and science are interwoven, as words are graphically manipulated to create surprising illusions.”
