Emigre: growing up in public

“The prevailing US stronghold of Postmodern graphic design is cluttered with icons. From the late 1980s onwards, a number of key schools (CalArts, Cranbrook, Rhode Island), personalities (Keedy, Carson, Makela, Deck) and publications (Ray Gun; Beach Culture) combined to form a catalyst, gradually establishing a network of ideological typographic discourse. …Emigre is also confined to this group of icons, but it is a misleading view. It remains essentially semi-detached from the leading PoMo players — not necessarily a step ahead, but working to one side.”

Logo Design Workshop

“For Web designers, the time always comes when you are asked to design a logo. Now, you might well be a seasoned graphic designer with years of logo designs under your belt or, you might think that it is just a matter of finding a typeface and tapping the words out on a keyboard and applying a Photoshop filter. Either way, you can improve your logos if you follow a few tried and trusted guidelines.” Here’s Joe Gillespie’s Logo Design Workshop, Part 2.

What Makes an Interface Communicate?

Peter Merholz: “So, I was asked to give a talk on ‘What Makes an Interface Communicate?’ for Web2000. At first I didn’t think I was going to do anything particularly interesting, but somehow (lots of coffee and the benefit of good books on interface design lying around the house) I put something together that doesn’t suck. … Anyway, since I was taking someone else’s title (I was subbing for another presenter), the talk ended up being more of a riff on what makes an interface communicate (as opposed to some thought out, reasoned discourse on the topic). Lots of sources cited, and a nifty slide comparing volume knobs.”
