“Martin Dodge, the man behind cybergeography.org, has co-written (with Rob Kitchin) a book called Mapping Cyberspace. WriteTheWeb has got an exclusive interview with him. In it, we asked him to explain what cybergeography is, and how it can be used as a tool for those people involved in the building of web sites. Martin’s candid and frank response was to compare the current state of cyberspace mapping with the very early days of real-world cartography.”

“Our exploratory user study on the use of a major portal site in Belgium shows that a category of ’skeptical Internet users’ has abandoned searching the web. The skeptical Internet user has made a return-on-investment evaluation of his Internet experience, and has come to the conclusion that the return on some sites is just not worth the investment of his personal time and energy. What about your site?”

“Web apps are applications or programs that run right in your browser. In most cases, there’s nothing to install, especially if you already have popular browser plug-ins like Macromedia Shockwave and Flash. Apps.com lists over 10,000 Web apps for you to use, most free of charge and ready-to-run. At Apps.com, you’ll find links to business and personal finance tools, e-mail and collaboration apps, calculators, games, and much more.”

“Research shows that improving the usability of software systems — including information-technology (IT); e-commerce; ’shrink-wrapped’ and other commercial software — can be highly cost-effective… The rule of thumb in many usability-aware organizations is that the cost-benefit ratio for usability is $1:$10-$100, that is, for every dollar spent implementing usability techniques, the organization will realize a benefit between $10 and $100.”

“I am an Art Director in advertising. My given name is Åsk (if you can’t spell it, stick to Dabitch please). I love ads. Put up the wee pathetically first edition of Adland back in April 96. It grew. My credentials are pretty damn good actually…” Make sure to check out the always fun similarity comparisons on the Badland page.

By Raymond Pirouz: “When you stop to think about all of the unique disciplines that need to work in harmony to create a solid, usable, and attractive interface, it’s no wonder that the Web is filled with so many horrific attempts at interface design. Too many Web developers assume that interface design is nothing more than decorative ‘button-making.’ In reality, the term ‘interface design’ is fundamentally the humanization of the non-human — the creation of an easy way for people to seamlessly interact with complex objects or technology. Its roots lie deep in computer science, industrial design, cognitive psychology, ergonomics, audiovisual design, animation, and graphic design.”

“This document specifies VoiceXML, the Voice Extensible Markup Language. VoiceXML is designed for creating audio dialogs that feature synthesized speech, digitized audio, recognition of spoken and DTMF key input, recording of spoken input, telephony, and mixed-initiative conversations. Its major goal is to bring the advantages of web-based development and content delivery to interactive voice response applications.”

“Intrigued by the idea of voice access to back-end applications, my research into VoiceXML and related technologies led me across the path of a very cool online tool that supports 100% online VoiceXML application development. The online development tool (and let me say that this may be the first time I’ve ever referred to a Web site as a ‘development tool’!) is Tellme Studio and it is a living testament to the power of XML-based technologies.”

The patents.com ‘Intellectual Property Law Web Server’ contains a large amount of intellectual property information. But hey! This is not legal advice! They’ll keep reminding you of that because they are lawyers, of course.
