DIGITAL DIGRESSIONS: Art at the End of the Millenium

“The Internet and particularly this medium, the World Wide Web, offer new tools for creative artists and an unprecedented ability to address an audience. While traditional museum curators have lamented the ascendancy of image over object, the prospect of introducing far-flung ‘visitors’ to contemporary art works or novel historical interpretations is much too tempting. Contemporary art on the Internet has largely been dominated by a ’salon’ aesthetic. It is partly due to the sociology of the early development of the World Wide Web. Many art sites have a kinship with the fine art salons or even camera clubs of the early 20th century; mutual admiration with very little peer criticism.”

Lakoff on Conceptual Metaphor

“As we have seen, the contemporary theory of metaphor is revolutionary in many respects. To give you some idea how revolutionary, here is a list of the basic results that differ from most previous accounts. 1) Metaphor is the main mechanism through which we comprehend abstract concepts and perform abstract reasoning; 2) Much subject matter, from the most mundane to the most abstruse scientific theories, can only be comprehended via metaphor; 3) Metaphor is fundamentally conceptual, not linguistic, in nature…”

D O T C O M

Mmmm. Neat. “DOTCOM stands for Dot Communication, a space that offers graphic and sound communication by ‘dots.’ I’ve made this page in order to seek posibility of using WWW for musical purpose, other than uploading premade sound files. Before, WWW pages that was related to sounds where non-intractive, like in IUMA, most only had sound files to download. Of course there were sites that had GA change the sound intractively, but the results were too abstract and wasn’t that much fun. …And also, this is my first challenge to use graphical elements. At first, this page only generated score image from the pattern, but now it can generate sound from drawings.” [sic]
