“A prehistoric map of the night sky has been discovered on the walls of the famous painted caves at Lascaux in central France. The map, which is thought to date back 16,500 years, shows three bright stars known today as the Summer Triangle. A map of the Pleiades star cluster has also been found among the Lascaux frescoes. And another pattern of stars, drawn 14,000 years ago, has been identified in a cave in Spain.”

“‘In the final analysis the brain is a biological system that does its job by consuming biological resources and providing a service, namely thinking or information processing,’ [Carnegie Mellon’s Marcel] Just said. ‘But when there is a choice of how to provide the service, mental economics may come into play, with the brain using the method that is less costly for that individual, namely the one in which he or she is more efficient.’”

“Vital Signs is a three year project in the Rainbow Group of the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory. Vital Signs is investigating new paradigms for visual interaction, based on a critique of the use of metaphor in user interfaces. As an alternative to metaphor, we propose that computer user interfaces and other information artefacts should be designed to encourage interaction with abstract sub-devices within the interface.”
