LANL Information Architecture Project

“The IA project is the Laboratory-wide effort to develop the framework for the selection, implementation, and support of computing and communications products and services. Stephen Downes’ Web

Stephen Downes’ space is rapidly becoming one of my favorite sites, I don’t know how I’ve neglected exploring it for so long. Lots of stuff here: “When I try to explain why I have a website at all (and yes, it needs explaining sometimes, when people observe that I am developing it at least partially on company time), I explain it thus: *as a ‘virtual lab’ — I experiment with new technologies, new designs, etc. on my page; *As an ‘alternative publisher’ — though more traditional publishers have been kind enough to take my articles I prefer the ‘instant publication’ effect; *As a research tool — especially my link portal — where I keep all the bits of information I need at my fingertips; *As a sampling instrument — the feedback I get from my site has been the primary source of new ideas and areas of improvement for me; *As a marketing tool — my website is almost always cited on funding applications as it serves as the best evidence of any expertise or insights I may have to offer.”

Mapping Web Sites

“Even with the best design, a web site is largely invisible and often difficult to grasp. As the web has grown as a publishing media, designers have struggled to find the equivalent of an index or table of contents for a web site. A web site is not a book, a magazine, a virtual city or a file system. We will explore the kinds of diagram that can visually represent a web site.”

Supplemental Navigation

Site maps, indexes, tables of contents, guides. “Supplemental navigation lets users view your content ‘from the outside,’ helping them get an overview of the space and providing quick access to deeper elements.”

Fill your print cart!

Good idea: “what I needed to do was print out a lot of pages, but not all. I needed to look at lots of pages and print out some. Now, that wasn’t too hard (just hit PRINT button), but it would have been nice if each page had had a printable version, with less clutter and only the text. Then I thought, but that would have been a major drag! For each page I wanted to print out go to the print page, print it, and then head back. There have to be better ways. I figured for some sites at least, a printing cart would be handy. Yep, like a shopping cart.”

Alternative views of Napolean’s March

Says Peter Merholz: “Tufte-ites are well-familiar with Charles Minard’s famous graphic representation of Napoleon’s March. Using new information visualization and manipulation techniques, folks at CMU have developed alternative ways of presenting the data.”

The Classics of Comic Book Advertising

“They promised us spectacular treasures and and secret knowledge, intelligent pets and incredible powers. The ads of the American comic book appealed to our fertile imaginations and tempted many of us to part with our paper route earnings and meager allowances. Often the spectacular treasures were nothing more than gross misrepresentations and the secret knowledge was a lesson in the value of reading the fine print. This collection represents some of the best, most memorable, most audacious and most bizarre of those ads.”

Information Architecture Guide

“Information Architecture involves the design of navigation systems to help people successfully find and manage data. On the Internet, Information Architecture can be seen as the structure and organisation of the website’s content (text, graphics, plug-ins) into definable categories assisted by a logical intuitive navigation system. After the architecture has been outlined the designers then can create the User Interface to support this design.”
