“PBS Online is proud to present the companion Web site for the PBS television special ‘Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires.’ On television and the Internet, you can learn in vivid detail how youthful amateurs, hippies and self-proclaimed ‘nerds’ accidentally changed the world.”

I love Edward Gorey. “Pity the poor books editors in the 1950s when confronted with yet another manuscript by the persistent Edward Gorey. Back then no one knew quite what to call his small gems with their manic pen-and-ink illustrations of overstuffed drawing rooms, set somewhere between the Edwardian era and the 1920s, and with punch lines taken from the unspeakable horror of their well-dressed characters’ untimely demises.”

“Photobook is an image database query environment which supports query-by-content and multiple views of the images. For example, the user can say ’show me the images which look like this one’ in terms of overall content; or ’show me the images whose Fourier transform looks like this one’s.’ The user can choose among a large repertoire of algorithms for such queries, including an algorithm which incorporates feedback into the other algorithms and allows them to ‘learn’ the user’s concept of image similarity.”

“Much has been said about the early phases in the design process of websites. However, the majority of this discussion has focused on the communication between the web designer and the client, such as establishing a ‘feel’ for the wishes and expectations of the client organization. This includes such things as establishing teams that will focus on creating a layout that conveys the desired mood or theme of the client organization. This is a very important concern, but ultimately web designers should first lay the groundwork for producing websites that are considered ‘usable’ by its users. That is, users may be enticed by websites that are aesthetically pleasing and promote an interesting mood, but they tend to be far more satisfied and stay with websites that are designed for their use in mind.”
