“I found a scrapbook of collage in an antique collective in Redwood City, California. Its 150 or so pages are completely filled with these works — quite a lot of effort. The book was not signed, and the store knew nothing about its origin. As far as I can tell, it was constructed in the very late 1970s, possibly the early 1980s. The materials are greeting cards, newspaper and magazine clippings and cartoons, jewelry catalogs, wildlife pictures, TV show ads, childrens’ books and other everyday sources.”

“Two things can kill a brand. Ironically, they are sort of opposites: over-extension and under utilization. Over extension is a result of brand arrogance. That is, the belief that one’s brand is so strong that you can slap it on anything and the dumb consumer will buy it… Under-utilization is when you don’t exercise a brand. You let it go dormant. You don’t enhance and innovate the product or service…”

The 3 Feb newsletter features a number of good color links: “First impressions are lasting impressions, and Web designers have only a fleeting moment to engage a visitor. According to the Institute for Color Research, ‘all human beings make a subconscious judgment about a person, environment, or item within 90 seconds of initial viewing, and that between 62% and 90% of that assessment is based on color alone.’”

“What will happen to me? My program? My career? The Silicon Valley Tarot knows. Created by Thomas Scoville, this tarot deck became ‘flavor of the month’ on the Internet before a single tree died to create a real card. But everyone who saw it wanted a real, physical deck … and so we printed one.”

In Public Beta. “SiSSYFiGHT 2000 is, like, an intense war between a bunch of girls who are all out to ruin each other’s popularity and self-esteem. The object is to physically attack and majorly dis your enemies until they are totally mortified beyond belief. You’ll never come out on top without making the right friends, so be careful who you’re nice to. Because in the end, only the shrewdest will survive with their social status intact!”

“After one year of running uidesign.net, I was aware that the original design though functional was looking tired. It was also failing to meet the requirements and expectations of Users and Owner to a sufficient degree. I was also acutely aware that if you are going to preach or teach then you need to lead by example. You have to walk-the-walk as well as talk-the-talk.” A series that goes through some major parts of redesigning a large web site.

“To develop an interface that can be operated automatically by a human places constraints on the design, constraints that we learn about from cognitive psychology’s studies of habit formation. For a feature to be habituating, for example, it must be usable without requiring that the user make any decisions.”
