“We’ve been tempted to forsake Communicator and only develop these advanced pages for Internet Explorer, because IE complies more closely with the World Wide Web Consortium’s standards. But that would exclude a large part of our audience. So when building sites for the masses, we’ve had two options: stick to lowest common denominator (HTML 3.2) by constructing pages entirely with tables and <FONT> tags, or build slightly more advanced Web pages that work on both Communicator and Explorer, cursing as we code. Fortunately, the days of wrestling with proprietary HTML are numbered. Netscape is expected to launch the first public beta of Communicator 5 soon (we may see a public beta before March), and those CSS and dHTML headaches will finally begin to fade.”

Search tools and directories… “direct search is a growing compilation of links to the search interfaces of resources that contain data not easily or entirely searchable/accessible from general search tools like Alta Vista, Google, and Infoseek. While general search tools are essential for retrieval of Internet materials many users do not realize that large amounts of information are not easily searchable via these tools.”
