“AppleSurf first appeared as a small section in the now-ended web site ‘An Apple A Day,’ back in mid-1996. In November 1998, AppleSurf moved on to become a part of MacOPINION. Early 1999, AppleSurf added the capability for anyone to add headline links to its collection, allowing any web sites to list their articles here.”

“The Getty Vocabulary Program, working closely with the Getty Standards Program, builds, maintains, and disseminates vocabulary tools for the visual arts and architecture. The vocabularies produced by the Getty are the Art & Architecture Thesaurus (AAT), the Union List of Artist Names (ULAN), and the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN).” Be sure to see all the links on the Improving Access Using Vocabularies page.

“Here they are, the 100 best writers of the 20th century. Nearly 500 people cast ballots via our Web site or by mail, each selecting up to three writers. More than 700 writers — from Edward Abbey (The Monkey Wrench Gang and Desert Solitaire) to William Zinsser (On Writing Well) — were nominated. The criteria: influence on the writing world, the quality of the work and the degree of originality or experimentation.”

Wow. “The National Graphic Design Image Database is an electronic archive that preserves and disseminates material related to twentieth century graphic arts and design. The system enables interactive and interdisciplinary analysis among faculty, students and the design community worldwide. The Cooper Union’s 20,000 piece Graphic Design Slide Library is the database’s original source. It includes donations from design organizations, private collectors, and educators, and features designs by noted American graphic artists.”

The World Wide Web has a lot to offer, but not all sources are equally valuable or reliable. Here are some points to consider.

Finally listened to the Flaming Lips’ 4-CD album “Zaireeka” as it was supposed to be listened to. Somehow one of the Macs’ CD players ended up on random, though. Ha. Then I crashed. You must love the Lips. Get more Lips on Google.

“Jakob Nielsen and I have come down on opposite sides of a usability debate. Jakob believes that the that the prevalence of bad design on the Web is an indication that the current method of designing Web sites is not working and should be replaced or augmented with a single set of design conventions. I believe that the Web is an adaptive system and that the prevalence of bad design is how evolving systems work.”
