Urbaser's investment in visual tools supports bid to become Los Angeles' urban services provider
Urbaser needed to stand out from other providers vying for large contract.

Above: XPLANE and Urbaser's teams collaborate during discovery session.

Known globally for its management and treatment of waste, Urbaser had an exciting opportunity to be considered as the urban services provider for solid refuse collection and treatment in the city of Los Angeles.

To win, the company needed to prove it would offer the most comprehensive, efficient and environmentally friendly solution available for the area. Other companies that were invited to enter the bid were global, well-renowned organizations that use some of the best waste treatment, recovery and composting technologies in the world, so Urbaser knew the competition would be tough.

Urbaser needed to highlight the advantages of using its own pool of technologies to sort, recover, compost and upgrade waste, as proven by existing installations in various continents. The goal was to win the account and break into the U.S. market for future contracts.

Above: Notes from visual discovery session.

XPLANE carried out a strategic visual discovery session to retrieve the distinctive elements in Urbaser's proposal in order to convey its unique advantages. A number of pain/gain and easy-to-evaluate questions were identified in the form of "Did you know that this solution is capable of recovering so much waste" and for each a straight-forward and structured XPLANATiON was provided.

Once Urbaser's bid was identified as a finalist, it was essential to provide a comprehensive presentation conveying the technical, financial and architectural elements of the offer. A visualization session was scheduled, gathering all key stakeholders in the project. The concepts and images identified in the session were then visualized and placed into an hour-long presentation composed of 50 slides and 10 photographs, and split into four different parts.

This allowed four speakers to present around their area of expertise: project overview, technology, architecture and finance. In addition, videos were incorporated to help the bid reviewers grasp complex technical issues.

The information conveyed by the flyer was well received amongst the different key organizations and the public of Los Angeles, helping to fuel Urbaser's bid to becoming a finalist for the business. The PowerPoint presentation was essential to obtain a favorable outcome by the key decision makers. At this time, we are still awaiting the final decision by the city of Los Angeles.

We believe that the ability to transmit a message to so many different people is an important and unique asset of XPLANE. Together we achieved comprehension and a homologous vision of the project.

XPLANE: Please explain the business challenge you set out to solve.

Joaquín Pérez de Ayala: Enefgy was designing a new project to promote more efficient use of electricity by its clients, which consist primarily of corporate organizations and public institutions. The new project focused on the installation and management of permanent energy efficiency programs. In developing the project, Enefgy determined it needed to accomplish two key tasks: 1. Explain the project in the clearest possible manner and 2. Motivate employees at the target organizations to use the service and learn more about being energy efficient.

XPLANE: Please describe how the discovery session and visual collaboration techniques aided in the process.

Joaquín Pérez de Ayala:Using XPLANE's methodology starting with the Discovery Session, we were able to clarify and organize the key concepts that needed to be communicated, while at the same time simplifying them. Visual thinking tools and skills were an instrumental part of the consultative process and used throughout the project. XPLANE consultants clarified and simplified the concepts which were then finalized by the design team, making it easy for the general public to understand.

XPLANE: What was the final deliverable created?

Joaquín Pérez de Ayala: After achieving complete alignment around what needed to be communicated, XPLANE developed a PowerPoint presentation that was later turned into a video, along with an interactive tool to educate users on the rational use of electricity and work and home.

XPLANE: What type of feedback or results were achieved from the project?

Joaquín Pérez de Ayala: The compelling video and interactive tool, which are available on the Enefgy Web site at
http://www.enefgy.com/video/enefgy2.swf, have been extremely well received by all viewers. People of all ages (8 to 70 years), backgrounds and levels of understanding around energy efficiency have embraced the message.
