Earth 2030: What Does the Future Hold?
Using Visuals to Address Climate Protection and Suggest Positive Actions

Today there are 6.5 billion people in the world - in 2030, there will be 8.3 billion. It is estimated that with this increase, global energy consumption will increase by 53 percent, placing a greater strain on our resources and climate.

By 2030, what will the future hold?

XPLANE has developed the animated movie, Earth 2030 for global BASF Group - the world's leading chemical company. Earth 2030 is a four-minute production that articulates in a visual and compelling way the future of the world's climate while inspiring viewers to take positive action by being more efficient and conscientious of their energy usage.

"At BASF we continually improve energy efficiency each and every day through the development of our products and the way we do business," said Christian Schubert, Director Corporate Communications BASF Group. "As for communications we looked for an easy to understand and compelling way to make a wider public aware of how the growing energy demand will effect our future - and motivate people to think of of their individual contribution to make a difference. The XPLANE team did a great job of helping us convey our messages and communicating them in a highly innovative and creative way."

Through a series of strategic visual collaboration sessions, XPLANE and BASF identified the key messages that needed to be communicated in the movie and what illustrations would convey these messages most clearly to viewers. Hand-drawn with modern style lines the animations in Earth 2030 are organic and move slightly as the viewers watch. Elements are "drawn" onto the screen, and then "erased." Much of the animation is light artwork over a dark background and accompanying copy was designed to match the illustration style. The movie is currently available in English, German and Japanese, and will be translated in further languages like French, Portuguese and Spanish.

"The creation of Earth 2030 was very much a collaborative effort between XPLANE and the team at BASF, making us all very proud of the finished product," said Antonio Robert, general manager for XPLANE EMEA. "By bringing together XPLANE consultants, designers and key decision makers at BASF, we were able to create a movie that is powerful, thought-provoking and artistically ahead of the curve."

According to BASF, energy efficiency is the most important single future source of energy to supply the growing energy demand and to protect the climate. Being energy efficient in industry, mobility and housing will offer the biggest potential to use energy more efficient. Just through energy efficiency, and with already existing technologies, it's possible to significantly curb predicted increasing global energy demand and thus the CO2-emissions by the year 2030.

    NUANCE COMMUNICATIONS, INC.
    Senior Marketing Director
    Mark Erwich
XPLANE: Please explain the business challenge you set out to solve.

Mark Erwich: We were looking to visualize how Dictaphone Healthcare Solutions from Nuance impact healthcare organizations.

XPLANE: What was your deliverable designed by XPLANE?

Mark Erwich: XPLANE created three visual tools that communicate our Dictaphone Healthcare Solutions' value proposition to current and prospective clients:

  • Scenario Map: high level illustration explains how the platform works: Click here to view map

  • Interactive Flash Version: Animated demonstration of the scenario map

  • PowerPoint version

  • XPLANE: How did visual thinking techniques aid in the process of clarifying the challenge you wanted to address?

Mark Erwich: Nuance offers a wide variety of solutions for clinical documentation and communication in the healthcare space; some of these solutions are connected, others are dependent. Visualization helped our sales and marketing team better communicate the areas where our portfolio most impacts patient care.

XPLANE: What kind of feedback or results did you receive on the project?

Mark Erwich: The best feedback was that people actually "got it." Specifically prospects like the animation that was created as part of this project, since it puts the patient in the center encompassed by care. Prospects now have a significantly faster understanding of how our solutions touch the physicians, and how we improve clinical documentation and communication.

Since we had many internal stakeholders it was important to gather all input and transform this into a visualization of our solutions that could be used across the organization. XPLANE did an excellent job capturing the information, bringing it down to the core components and visualizing it in such a way that it became easy for our prospects to understand.
