XPLANE designs produce strong results for Weatherford |
|
Q&A with Malcolm Duncan, manager of Global HR Management Systems and Technology, Weatherford |
Above: Final render of Weatherford process map
XPLANE: What was the business challenge you set out to solve?
Duncan: After more than 200 mergers and acquisitions,
Weatherford was running 42 different human resource systems. Over 18
months we implemented and rolled out a single PeopleSoft HRMS system to
more than 47,000 employees spread
over 60 countries worldwide, but the challenge of communicating the
benefits and intricacies of this new system to a distributed workforce
remained. While we had a wealth of detailed documentation and
PowerPoint presentations we lacked a
consolidated, high impact message that could capture and communicate
with our people. We needed a clear, concise way to deliver our message
to all levels, languages and cultures while remaining cost effective.
XPLANE: Can you describe the XPLANE/Weatherford discovery process?
Duncan: We held our Discovery Session with XPLANE over the phone
and by WebEx. Going in, Weatherford already had an idea of what we
wanted to create and communicate but it was remarkable to me how well
XPLANE was able to distill
and interpret what we needed - essentially pulling ideas from my head
and transforming them into deliverable that amazed all (myself
included).

XPLANE: What was the final deliverable created?
Duncan: The first deliverable created was a print poster that
clearly depicted the Work Life Cycle of an employee in an organization
and the role played by PeopleSoft HRMS system in managing talent and
partnering with HR as an
enabler. The poster was printed in 12 different languages and
distributed to 102 global Weatherford locations. It measures 4 1/2' x 3
1/2' and can be found in every Weatherford HR office. Also, every HR
representative has an 11" x 17"
poster displayed in his/her office.
We further enhanced our communication by animating the map into an
interactive tool to help onboard new employees. The online piece
included video and images specific to each Weatherford location, in
bring the message closer to home. This tool is currently being rolled
out and will be fully active by summer 2009.
XPLANE: What kind of feedback or results did you receive on the project?
Duncan: We have had an overwhelming response. The simplicity of
the map needed no training; on the contrary we were challenged by a
positive problem of keeping up with demand for the piece. It literally
"switched on a light" for
Weatherford HR personnel who were tasked with evangelizing the merits
of the new system.
XPLANE: Would you choose XPLANE for future projects and why?
Duncan: Absolutely yes. We will partner with XPLANE on any
project that requires a graphical representation of a concept and
process. I truly believe they have the formula to take a sapling of a
concept/ idea and convert it into a
simple, crisp and hard hitting message that leaves a lasting impression
on the human mind.

 We
spent $24,000 on the poster and in turn I estimate our savings to the
tune of $150,000 in travel expenses that would have been incurred from
visiting each location and trying to explain the new system. When I
presented this to my
executive management, it turned out to be an easy sell. |
