Creating a customized visual language to tell corporate story |
|
Q&A with Martin Hill, vice president of marketing, Lawson Software |
Above: Travis White, vice president of strategy and planning at Lawson, uses the visual language to tell the company's mission, vision and values story. Click to watch full video.
XPLANE: What was the business challenge Lawson was out to solve?
MH: We were looking to explore the idea of creating a Lawson-centric visual language. Lawson already had developed a voice, vocabulary and tone that are unique to the company but we wanted to take the
next step by creating a Lawson visual language that would allow our customers and employees an easy way to embrace who we are as an organization while setting us apart from the competition. Lawson wanted to create a way to visually
explain and differentiate our products in a way that was easily understood by customers. However, this was a large undertaking so we decided to "test" out our visual language theory internally first by transforming our written mission,
vision and values into visuals. This would allow us to explore some new ideas without having to tackle the largest challenge right away.
XPLANE: Tell us about the XPLANE/Lawson discovery process.
MH: The XPLANE team travelled to our offices for the initial discovery session. The meeting gave the group the opportunity to fully understand the Lawson business and for us to describe to XPLANE our mission, vision and value
statements. From there, the combined team looked deeper into each of these statements and pulled out the key differentiators and messages to be communicated. XPLANE then started creating suggestions for visualization.

XPLANE: What was the final deliverable created by XPLANE for Lawson?
MH: Going into this project we didn't know what we were going to end up with, all we knew was that we wanted something that would visually represent our mission, vision and values. We wanted it to be simple enough for our employees
to reproduce, complete enough to tell the whole story, and memorable enough to act as a reminder of the story whenever they saw it. XPLANE produced a final image that did just that. The next step was to then empower our people to actually
be able to draw the visual depiction themselves.
Our team travelled to Spain where we once again reconvened with XPLANE who taught us techniques for drawing the mission, vision and values with confidence. Out of that session we took away recorded videos of our team drawing the
statements and a first draft of a pamphlet which supported the video recordings which we finished in house.

XPLANE: What kind of feedback or results did you receive on the project?
MH: Lawson employees have been impressed with the new image. What I've seen is that when being presented, the drawing itself isn't the star of the show but instead the person who's holding the pen. People are absolutely captivated
by the visualization.

XPLANE: Would you choose XPLANE for future projects and why?
MH: Definitely. Now that we've been trained by XPLANE on visual language techniques we feel empowered to take on new projects we wouldn't have before. We also recognize that XPLANE has a deep expertise and a lot of very valuable
experience we can tap into. I look forward to working with the team there again to gain new ideas and fresh perspectives on future visualization projects.

If we continue to find ways to explain complex concepts, through a visual language I'm sure it will positively impact sales, internal training, product execution and how our customers view us. In working with XPLANE we've realized a new
way of thinking and proven that a visual language does work.
