Ten Rules to Deliver an Engaging Presentation |
A great presentation is all about the story being told. To become a presentation professional follow these 10 rules.
Rule # 1
Prepare visually. Get away from the computer. Draw out your ideas to
clarify your presentation. The process of visualizing the presentation,
your ideas, and flow of thought in a visual light will help you gain
greater clarity and a
clearer picture of your presentation.
Rule # 2
Clear introduction. A clear roadmap is a critical element of a good
presentation. Give your audience a definitive view of the topics you
plan to cover. You do not need to go into any depth, just introduce the
main points. Remember,
judgments are made within the first two minutes.
Rule # 3
Content for the audience. Do not try to communicate everything. Pick
only the most important messages. Your audience will remember more if
you choose a simple and clear message.
Rule # 4
Visuals, visuals, visuals. Pictures are worth a thousand words. No
matter what, incorporate visuals to support your points. Bullet points
do not count as "visuals."
Rule # 5
Turn complexity to simplicity. Simple and clear meaning is much more
powerful. Translate complex information into concrete visual images.
Explaining a process? Visually map it out using images to reinforce the
progress.
Rule # 6
Consistency. Stay consistent throughout your presentation. Same font,
stay within the same color palate, high energy and make sure the
content is presented in an easy to understand sequence. Keep the viewer
engaged, not distracted.
Rule # 7
Share your enthusiasm. Be sincere and authentic. Make the audience feel
your passion. Center your presentation around great ideas, not the
slides.
Rule # 8
Make numbers or figures relevant. If you are speaking of large
monumental figures, break down the numbers to make the statistics
relevant today. Its not about the numbers, it's about what the numbers
mean.
Rule # 9
Repetition creates clarity. Stay engaging throughout. Repetition is
a classic technique and can help create clarity for the listener. Don't
over use, but use it to tie your points together. Repetition creates
clarity.
Rule # 10
Conclusion. It's important to start strong, but even more important to
end stronger. End your presentation with the most important piece. What
you want your listener to walk away with?

Transforming Visio Diagrams into Dynamic Training Tools |
InterContinental Hotels Group
OnBoard Project Management Kit |
Known for developing customized visual communication tools unique to each client and business challenge,
XPLANE created the OnBoard Project Management Kit for
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) as a unique way to drive greater understanding, efficiency and ultimately results for the global hospitality chain.

XPLANE was asked to transform 140 Visio diagrams into a visually
appealing, multi-dimensional instruction tool to streamline the
procedures for opening new hotels.

IHG, an international owner and operator of hotels with over 3,700
properties in 100 countries, IHG's portfolio of brands includes
wellknown names like Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn Express. While
opening new hotels is a common practice for
IHG, the company needed a program to uphold its hotel opening mission
of delivering what hotel owners need, when they need it. Further, IHG
needed a program
that supported its strategic goal of adding up to 60,000 net hotel
rooms to its global portfolio, and was flexible enough to evolve with
new hotel innovation.
Without an organized approach IHG struggled with forecasting
openings, which in turn greatly impacted its ability to predict profit
and revenues. IHG developed a comprehensive eight-phased approach to
hotel openings documented in over 140
Visio diagrams: event sequencing, meetings and issues for resolution.
However, the phases' complex sub-processes often led to
misinterpretation, causing opening inconsistencies and brand confusion
among consumers.
XPLANE interviewed IHG franchise services team members to
understand the sequencing of steps involved in the opening process.
XPLANE first created an
overview map
to illustrate the high-level eight-phased approach. Then, by
transforming 140 Visio diagrams, XPLANE created a series of visually
rich and easy-to-follow drill-down maps that engaged participants and
enhanced their
understanding. The final OnBoard Project Management Kit with Quick
Start guide and associated phase booklets allow key decision makers to
be better equipped to address the challenges and questions that arise
when opening a new hotel, in
turn eliminating unnecessary delays and confusion.
