“It never really did feel right. All those IPOs, all those multibillion-dollar market capitalizations, all that hype. From late 1998 through the summer of 2000, Wall Street was an out-of-control beast, and IPOs were its sustenance. Now the cleanup begins, and it’s looking ugly. The Securities and Exchange Commission is reportedly investigating a host of questionable issues, including whether investment banks unfairly allotted pre-IPO shares in return for a variety of kickbacks. Meanwhile, some banks’ compliance officers are said to be conducting internal investigations.”
